In Scripture, Jesus is often referred to as a teacher. John 13:13 says, “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” Yesterday, I cried out to the Lord, asking him to teach me how to show the love of Jesus to the kids with my limited ability to speak Spanish. Let me testify that God hears our prayers and He loves to fulfill them when they are in his will.
Today, my team spent the day cleaning out the makeshift schoolhouse we will be doing ministry in. We moved huge stacks of boxes filled with rice donated from feeding ministries in the States. We then cleaned and organized every item that made up the classrooms, kitchen, and storage areas. As we were moving boxes, three little boys from the village came to help us. One was seven years old, named Edwin. Immediately, God taught me how to minister to Edwin. He gave me more Spanish words than I have ever spoken before. He taught me how to play, interact, and love him. We spent the day sharing snacks, dancing with no music, and jumping off dirt piles. As I was washing dishes in a bucket outside, I turned around to see that Edwin had picked me a handful of flowers. Thank you, Jesus, for teaching me how to love these kids. Thank you, Edwin, for being a walking testimony of God’s faithfulness and kindness.
After we finished cleaning, my team and the Guatemalan ministry team shared a meal. The leader of the ministry, Loyda, asked each of us why we had decided to go on the World Race. I shared about how the Lord had asked me to go on it over a year ago. One of the Guatemalan’s eating with us, named Lily, only speaks Spanish. She asked Loyda to ask me how I heard the voice of the Lord telling me to go. Sitting around a table in a tiny school building in Guatemala, I had the opportunity to share how to hear the voice of the Lord. Loyda translated as I spoke slowly about my experience. We then laid hands and prayed over Lily to be filled with the Holy Spirit and hear the voice of God. After praying, she looked up with tears in her eyes and thanked us in Spanish. In moments like these, I feel each of the promises God has spoken to me being fulfilled by God. I am so grateful that Jesus is a teacher and that he is teaching me how to minister and share how to hear his voice.
